Last year I came across an advert for The Business Start Up Event which was taking place in Central London, which promised to have many top businesspeople speaking at the event. It was completely free, so I attended it and I was amazed at the amount of advice and knowledge the speakers were willing to give away. Business is one of my roads to wealth, so any chance to find out more about other peoples businesses appealed to me. The highlight for me was hearing James Caan talking about how he made it big.
I strongly advise you to go to it, as it's happening at the end of this month, and I will write a report of what I learned from it.
The Business Start up Event is held every year. Tickets are free. At the moment it is held at the Excel centre which can be reached via Docklands light railway. This year, it is on the 28th and 29th May 2009 from 10:00 to 17:00. I went to it last year and I was very impressed as I came face to face with great business people and millionaires, such as James Caan, Levi Roots, Caprice.
The organisers make their money from having about 200 small businesses paying them thousands of pounds to have a stall each at the venue, where they can advertise their products. This revenue could be around 1 million pounds in total to the organisers. The organisers then use a significant portion of this money to hire famous and respected business people to speak at the event, in separate speaking halls at the venue.
The small businesses at each stall give away plenty of freebies, so bring a bag and grab everything you can. I picked up some excellent, brand new, high quality business magazines for free last time, as well as many other branded gifts.
One word of advice about making sure that you get to see the best speakers: there were massive queues to get into each speaking hall, and seating was limited. I missed millionaire Martin Webb's talk due to this, but I later found out that there is a separate big cinema screen further down the hall which provides live video of each talk as it happens, so everybody can watch. I watched all subsequent talks by the top speakers on this big screen, no queuing, no fuss.
You can: watch successful businesspeople giving live talks, and ask them questions afterwards, mingle with the millionaires, and meet many famous people. Last year there was a live Dragons Den type panel called “Midas Touch” where aspiring business people pitched to real investors for money. This was a joy to witness, and it reinforced my belief that I will never go begging for money to start any of my businesses, if I can avoid it.
