I've had a look at some of the recent news stories concerning money.
UK MPs have been using taxpayers money for their own personal gain. They have charged for expenses such as non-existent mortgages, Peter Viggers even claimed for a "duck island" house for his pond, which cost about £2000. Taxpayers money was used to prop up their own income, and financial ventures. Surely nobody will believe politicians about anything now. The outpouring of public rage shows just how important and sensitive the issue of money is to people. It highlights the need to act with integrity when it comes to dealing financially with other people. The man on the street has been persecuted heavily for more minor things such as illegal Internet downloading, yet here are MPs brazenly stealing from the public purse. These MPs should all be jailed, but then there would be nobody left to run the country...
Hong Kong billionaire Nina Wang died without a will recently and friends and family are still arguing over her legacy, once again highlighting the need for forward planning in life. This shows you should always make a will.
It's amazing how many fraudsters are out there. Company boss Douglas Brown submitted false invoices for 7 years, so he and his wife could live like millionaires. He was happy to sack loyal employees, and this story shows how some people choose to pursue money corruptly.
Another fraud exposed is TV "SAS hero and army expert" Bob Spour, who was actually never in the SAS! Amazingly nobody bothered to check his credentials and history and he forged a lucrative career for years, until he was found out. This shows how some people will stop at nothing to pull the wool over peoples eyes and make money for themselves.
Veteran explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes climbed Mount Everest on his third attempt, even though he is a pensioner. Even though he failed twice before, he kept trying and eventually succeeded. He had a plan, and he had guides and help along the way, so he did not go into the endeavour unprepared. This reminds me of the pursuit of wealth, you have to keep trying, even when you have failed a few times.
People say the recession will end soon but Britain is now 754bn in debt. We will be paying for this for a long time yet. People seem to think this recession will be over in 60 seconds. These dark dark economic times will not disappear overnight. Yes there has been a massive injection of cash into the economy, but no recession has only lasted two years! 10 years seems to be the average time of duration, judging by past ones. Gone in 60 seconds? Not this recession.
The wedding gift firm WrapIt went into administration. Reading its story shows that they clearly had good people running it, but it just failed anyway. The calibre of people involved shows that nothing is ever guaranteed in business, or in life. Everyone involved wanted to make money, but in the end, it just didn't work out. This shows that getting rich is not guaranteed or easy for anyone.
There is plenty of stuff in the news every day about finance. Every tale is an opportunity to learn about how people behave when it comes to money. Money is a prevalent factor in everybody's life, and like it or love it, it will always be in the news.
