I helped out at a children's school fair a few days ago. I was giving away leaflets to families and children who came to the stall. I saw this as a good way to test my marketing skills. I noticed that people might look at the stall and feel apprehensive, others might come to the stall yet not ask for a leaflet, and other people would walk past.
I discovered that I had to make the effort to promote the leaflets to everyone. I had to keep on pushing, and keep making people aware.
I thought back to The Business Start Up Event I attended a few weeks ago, and about how many of the speakers there said marketing was the most important thing. I understood even more why certain speakers were promoting and selling their own brands and seminars, it was because nobody else was going to do it for them.
At the school fair, Its amazing what a vast difference it made to approaching people and selling them the leaflets I had, rather than just waiting and hoping they would come and get some. Even at something as seemingly trivial as a school fair, marketing is always very important.
