Book review of The New Paradigm

The New Paradigm is written by legendary fund manager and billionaire George Soros. It is written to coincide with the current credit crunch, and discusses how the financial markets are the way they are.

Soros sees himself as a philosopher and thinks we need to take into consideration that other peoples opinions can affect the marketplace.

Soros is influenced by the late economist Karl Popper. What I liked about this book was that it is nice and short and did not waste time with waffle. Soros says that human opinions and thoughts affect the price of things. He calls this reflexivity. He argues that the world is separate from our opinion of it, but with our emotions and thoughts, we actually distort reality.

In the last chapter, Soros says "People want to know what lies ahead. I cannot tell them because I do not know. I'm just trying to explain the human condition". This sums up the fact that as good as he is, he cannot predict the future, he can only make a good guess occasionally. I score this book 3 stars out of 5.
